auteur theory evaluation

Auteur film studies review:
The power point presentation which I did about auteur allowed me to discuss the idea of the auteur theory and the different directors use the idea of the theory in their work. In my PowerPoint I focused my work on tarantion.
The whole idea of the power point and showing others my work was a great idea as it allows me to work in groups and receive feedback to help make my work better. This gave me a deeper understanding about my own work and how I can improve it, but also gave me an instate to another people’s work and how they presented their director they were given.
Firstly, in my feedback for improvements to my work, I was told to place YouTube clips in my actual power point to show the video on the slide instead of going off the power point and going online. This wasted time and made my work look messy. To improve my work, I could ask someone for help who can show me how to place the videos onto the PowerPoint slides. This would make my work look nicer in general and would make my life easier instead of going off the slide to go back on it. Another thing I can improve is placing quotations from interviews which my director has been in. This would make my work look seem more reliable as I have quotations from the actual director backing up my opinion which I have stated. Another improvement I was informed about was to study more than 2 films. To improve my work, I could have used other films to back my idea up about the auteur theory and back up my opinion regarding tarantions work. Finally, I could have placed more photos in my work. This would have helped me explain certain scenes which I would have liked to talk about. To improve this, I could add more pictures which would help me explain the scenes as I had to just use videos and use my knowledge. Whereas if I did more research of the scene and place photos in there, I would have explained my point a lot better and clearer.
In general, I think my work on this topic went really well. I enjoyed showing people my ideas regarding the auteur theory and how I think tarantion is an auteur. I also enjoyed learning about other people’s auteurs and how they decided to present the work compared to my work. In my opinion I would like to do this again as I personally think I get a better and deeper understanding of the certain topic, which will help me revise when it comes towards the exam.

Pans Labyrinth

Pans labyrinth
The director Del Toro has used cinematography and mise en scène to explore and create meaning from within the film. He does this by using different elements from both cinematography and mise en scene. This is all shown through different shots and what’s within the frame of the shot and what the shot may contain. To explain this the scène I have decided to do it the scène where Mercedes is trying to sneak food items and medical supplies and letters to the enemy of her boss Vidal. Later on, she gets caught and is tied up in the food closet and later escape’s Vidal and tries to save ofelia from getting hurt. (1:25:55-1:29:16)
The scene first begins in the house where everyone lives. From this we see a mid-shot of Mercedes and ofelia outside. we can tell its mise en scence because of the setting used and the props. We know its outside due to the harsh weather conditions and the umbrella Mercedes is holding with her bag of goodies for the enemy tribe. We can also tell its outside due to the sound of rain on Mercedes umbrella and their footsteps on the ground. This sound is also known as diegetic sound because its created within the scene. From this scène the lighting low key and rather dark. This has been used to create a more of a shadowy feel to the scene and may even create a sense of fear when watching it.
While in the woods, we get a close up of Mercedes face looking around at the sound she thought she heard. As she thinks something is getting closer her breathing starts to get heavier. This sound is known as diegetic because its created within the sequence. It has been used to how their panicking from running away as their scared about being caught. When she turns, we see Vidal and his army waiting there all staring at Mercedes and ofelia. This mid shot contains Mercedes and Vidal and we can see both of their facial reactions within the sequence. Mercedes facial reaction is very different compared to Vidal’s. Her reaction is pure shock and confusion. From the close up of her face, we can see how she is physically scared for her life. This has been used to show emotion within the scene and make the audience feel sorry for he- or sympathy. We can see this by the lighting and her facial expressions and the way she acted when seeing Vidal. The lighting on her face is a mixture of light and dark. On her face the lighting is very light, so we can see her reaction whereas in the background the lighting is very dark. The low-key lighting on the face has been used to show her reaction within the film and to show how scared she actually is for her safety as she knows she been caught sneaking things to her brother to keep him and his army healthy.
The scene then cuts and goes to Ofelia being thrown into her room by Vidal. While there, there is a two shot between Ofelia and Vidal. This has been used to show the two of them and their emotions. There emotions are different compared to each other’s. This means Ofelia is feeling sad and guilty emotions, whereas Vidal’s emptions are mainly anger and betrayal. This is because his head worker has been helping the enemy team for a while behind his back. This is also shown though mise en scene and though their facial expressions and body language. Their facial expressions are very different. Ofilia is fearing her life and crying whereas Vidal’s are anger and hurt. Later on, in the scene he hits the little girl for the actions she has committed. This is linked to the context of the film where we people within the civil war because of general Franco. He conflicted a lot of pain within the people of Spain because he wanted more and more power until he dies in 1975. This is shown in the film throughout when he hurts people in ways we would never normally expect. This is shocking but also normal to an extent. This means, it may be shocking to watch and listen to, but within the century that the film was based in, they were the punishments and ways of dying. The pain Vidial has inflicted can also be seen when he leaves Oflilias room and she physically breaks down. Within the scene we see dark colours which mean the lighting is there to create a dark mood within the scene. We also hear the diegetic sound of her crying. This is because of all the pain she is going through and to show to the audience what it was really like to be part of the civil war and the effects it has on people.
Finally, we get to the scene where Mercedes is facing her punishment for betraying Vidal and helping the army he hates so much. At the beginning of this scene, we can see him trying to intimidate her by emptying her bag in front of her. While doing this the camera zooms out of the bad and zooms out into the room and in particular where Mercedes is getting tied up to the pole just like one of the other people from the enemy army earlier on in the film. The events from earlier in the film may have been a foreshadow of what may happen if Mercedes keeps smuggling things to the other army. While in this scene, there is mise en scene used to show body language between Mercedes and Vidal. This is also a two shot. This shot has been used to show the effect and connection between the two of the and the pain he is causing to her. While the scene is happening, the colour of the room is very dark which portrays a dark and cold room which may change the audience’s mood. This scene then later sees Vidal using his tools to try and intimidate Mercedes. This then later back fires on him as he is hurt by Mercedes when she later escapes. This has been used to show women rights within that generation and how women stands up to men. L

crimson peak

Crimson peak

At the beginning of the film sequence, there is low key lighting. This is used to show how dark and frightening the atmosphere is. The lighting focuses on the girl within the scene. We first see low key lighting within the scene by the darkness and shadows on her face. This gives the audience a sense of fear. Within the scene, we see the actor acting waking up in the middle night. From this we can see the confusion on the actor’s face - this is fairly normal within the genre of horror. A lot of horror films are set within the dark, dreary night to give the sense of fear and to scare the audience. This is how people can tell the difference between genres. Further on in the film clip, the actor goes to find her lost dog. While looking, we see a view of the other baloneys and the old looking stair cases. A lot of pathetic fallacy is used when we see this view as we can see how the director has used weather to set the scene for us as the audience. Within this one shot we see a point of view shot and a mid-shot. While seeing these buildings we get a sense of derelict and unsafety. The point of view shot gives the audience a hint that someone may be following her, which foreshadows an event which we later see in the film. This may have been used to try and provoke an emotion within the film- such as fright. The mid shot has been used to show the actor body language and emotion from waist up. It also shows props and the setting in the background, which helps the audience understand the setting and what props are used and why they might be used. This is also known as mise-es-scence. Throughout the sequence, we hear a lot of not diegetic sound such as the dog barking at the very beginning and doors slamming and creaking throughout the whole snip of the film. The director may have used this to try and evoke terror within the audience and show just how big the building is as there is a lot of creaking and slamming. Mid way though the clip, the actor thinks her dog isn’t in the same room as her. Her first instinct is to open the door to get her dog. While opening the door, the dog runs in, then the door slams shut creating a dramatic scene, which may provoke fright within the audience. This is a clear example of non-diegetic sound as the dog isn’t there, but we can still hear the animal, this creates a sense of mystery and spiritual sense from the viewers point of view. While this door is open, we get a sneak peek to what the demon creature that is haunting the girl looks like. When they are at the door, we see a red face with its hand wrapped around the side of the door with yellow looking eyes. This physically Shows the audience how close she was to the creature and how close she may have been to getting hurt. It also shows us what the creature looks like. This shot is called a two shot as it has two people in. This shot may have been used to show how we can see two people in the scene, but the girl only thinks it her which may create panic to us as an audience and make us fear for the girl’s safety. Then after the girl shuts the door straight away, the demon pops out of the ground. This is an example of a long shot. This was used to show what is down the corridor and what we as an audience see from the girl’s point of view. While the girl is trying to escape, we see all the emotions on her face-such as fear. While running, we hear the diegetic sound of her breathing really fast- like she’s panting like the dog. This creates a sense of fear as we question her safety. Near the end we come across a big box which the girl goes straight to. This creates a feeling of confusion to the audience as we want to know why she went straight to the box. While near the box, we get a close up of the top. This gives the audience a clue which may be foreshadowing something that may happen later on in the film.

film studies homework

A level film studies

what was your faourite film over the summer?

My favourite film of the summer was the bad education movie. I liked this film because it was highly amusing and made me and my friends laugh a lot. It was truly amazing to see how many locations the movie was filmed at in such a small amount of time, some include: Amsterdam, the Eden project, Penleven castle, port jago- these are all based in Cornwall, and many more locations. The film only took 5 weeks to film which shows how committed everyone was who was part of film to get the film filmed and produced then released to the public to watch. Each character made the movie funny in their own way which for me made the film more enjoyable as they added there own touch and personality to the movie and in a way made me feel like I was on the trip to Cornwall with them all. One key aspect of the film has to be the beginning were most of the cast are in Amsterdam filming in and around the Anne frank museum. The scene begins with the cast waiting patiently to enter the museum then Mitchell harper- Charlie Wernham joins them with creps, before Alfie- jack Whitehall eats his, Mitchell and Cleo hide magic mushrooms in the crep and then pass the food to Alfie to eat. Within a couple of minutes Alfie is hallunsinating  and can barley see in a straight line, then out of the corner of his eye he thinks the wax figure of Anne is talking to him, asking him to help her escape from the museum. Being under the influence of drugs Alfie became more of a dare devil and ran away with the wax figure. Eventually the police found out the figure was missing and started chasing Alfie around the streets of Amsterdam. Alfie soon found out the police were getting closer to him so stole a bike of the wall and placed the wax figure in the basket on the front of the bike. This was influenced from the film e.t and this was clearly shown by Alfie wearing the same red iconic top as Elliot when riding the bike. Another clear comparrision to the film is when Alfie under the influence of drugs he thinks he can fly and in the film Elliot and e.t fly on the bike. While on the bike Alfie is nearly caught by the police and is near a dead end so he thinks fast and decided to try and jump a ramp and make it to the other side of the bridge, while doing this he does not succeed so ends up in the river with Anne and the bike. This is a key aspect of the film as not only was it funny and was very creative in the way it was filled and the way it linked to e.t- by this I mean at the beginning we all think its going to be a subtle opening to a movie but by the end of the beginning it has to be one of the funniest things I have seen and one of the funniest introductions to a film I have ever witnessed.
